Title: The Green Ant Nest
Commission: Charles Darwin University, Darwin, NT 2018
African Mahogany
Inspired by Green Ant nests (Oecophylla smaragdina) commonly found in trees across the Top End of Australia, local Darwin sculptor and CDU alumni Joel Mitchell has skillfully depicted the leaves of the swamp Bloodwood (Eucalyptus Corymbia ptychocarpa) in a curvaceous nest-like form.
The sculpture, crafted from a single slab of African mahogany, was commissioned by Charles Darwin University following the destruction of Cyclone Marcus in March 2018.
‘As CDU is a university that includes many diverse people and cultures, this sculpture represents the things that bring people together. It celebrates this diverse space of learning where everyone can come together in unity, respect, optimism and understanding.’
